St. Patrick's Day

by Victoria Smith

Poems and Songs

St. Patrick's Day

Author Unknown

Leprechauns peeking,
Around a willow tree,
Pussy willows waking,
Longing to be free.
Colleens and shamrocks
And castles old and gray,
Put them all together
To make St. Patrick's Day.

St. Patrick's Day

Author Unknown

St. Patrick came from Ireland
A country trimmed with green
It has the shamrocks and the pipes
Those leprechauns you've seen
Those leprechauns will trip you
You'll fall flat on your face
They'll tickle your nose and sour the milk
Then find a hiding place!

St. Patrick's Day

 by Aileen Fisher

Oh, my mother isn't Irish
And my father isn't too,
But today I feel as Irish
As the really Irish do.

For today I wear a shamrock
That is green in every way
And though I am Canadian,
I am Irish -- for today!

Leprechaun

Author Unknown

Leprechaun, leprechaun, fly across the sea
And fetch an emerald shamrock for you and me.
Do not bring a nettle or a thistle for a joke,
But bring an Irish shamrock, for we are Irish folk.
And you and I, my leprechaun, will wear the shamrock gay,
And match it with and Irish smile upon St. Patrick's Day!

The Leprechaun

Author Unknown

A leprechaun is small and green
He hides where he cannot be seen.
But if you catch one on this day,
He must give his gold away.

I'm a Little Leprechaun

Author Unknown
(tune: I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little leprechaun
Dressed in green
The tiniest man that you have ever seen.
If you ever catch me,
So it's told,
I'll give to you my pot of gold.

Five Little  Leprechauns

Author Unknown

Five little leprechauns scurrying by my door,
One jumped away, then there were four.
Four little leprechauns climbing in my tree,
One hid in the green leaves, then there were three.
Three little leprechauns, just a busy few,
One went for a pot of gold, then there were two.
Two little leprechauns, having lots of fun,
One hopped over the rainbow, then there was one.
One little leprechaun, with all his work done.
He slipped off for a nap, then there were none.

Eensy Weensy Leprechaun

Author Unknown

An eensy, weensy leprechaun
Came out on St. Patrick's Day.
To look for the gold
That was hidden far away.
Over the rainbow
Was where he was told.
So, with a wink of his green eye,
He ran to get the gold.

This leveled guided reading book is perfect for your St. Patrick's Day unit.

Writing

What Do Leprechauns Wear?

On Friday, March 16, we will make a leprechaun paperbag puppet and complete the Leprechaun description:  They write their name on the first line and color words to describe their leprechaun for the remainder of the sentences.

            _________________ is a leprechaun.

He is wearing a ______________ hat,

            __________ coat, ______________ pants,

            and __________shoes.

We will write a story about what kind of trick they would play if they were a leprechaun.
