Students independently work in Managed Independent Learning Literacy Centers during Guided Reading group time.

Literacy Centers

Each of our Centers are different, reading based activities that students work on independently while I am working with small reading groups.

Students participate in our Daily Five activities:

  • Reading to Self
  • Reading to Someone
  • Listening to Reading
  • Working on Writing
  • Spelling/Word Work

Students plan their time with these goals in mind:

  • What are my goals in reading and writing?
  • What will I do first?
  • Whom with I work with?
  • What will I accomplish?
  • What was I working on yesterday that I want to continue today?

Literacy Centers provide students with the collaboration and practice necessary to orchestrate their ever-expanding knowledge of literacy.

This time of the day is designed to increase letter/sound knowledge, listening skills, oral language expression, rhyme, letter formation, word study, reading a

Students absolutely love Centers because they have choices and they are in control of their own learning. While students are "engaged in center time" they are growing as a reader and writing, fluency, and cooperation.

 "Three Rules for Literary Success:

1. Read a lot.      2. Write a lot.    3. Read a lot more, write a lot more."

Robert Silverberg

Some of the Centers that we do in first grade are listed below with a short explanation

"What can I do here?" is a famous questions students ask when they visit a Literacy Corner [center]. To avoid the proplem of students not knowing what they can do, or to avoid the problem of off task behavior, create "I Can..." posters for each Literacy Corner area.

Before starting Guided Reading Groups we plan what is available in the Daily 5 using a Learning Log. At the end of the day, the students write what they did in their Learning Log.
